魏晋时期，在文学上有名气的“竹林七贤”之一的山涛，40岁才当上官，在京城任尚书吏郎，他很敬重有才学的嵇康，因工作调动想推荐嵇康去接替他的位置，可嵇康不愿。后来他为吏部尚书，启用嵇绍。王戎盛赞山涛是没有琢磨的璞玉。
