卜昼卜夜的典故

敬仲，即春秋时陈国的公子完，同陈宣公是兄弟。陈宣公为了叫宠姬所生的儿子款为太子，便把原来立为太子的大儿子御寇杀了。敬仲是站在御寇一边的，因此不能在陈国安身立足，便投奔齐国。齐桓公很恭敬地接待敬仲，拜他为“卿”。敬仲谦虚地说：“我是投奔贵国的客人，蒙您收留，让我在这里舒舒服服地住下，我已经非常感激了，怎敢高居卿位，让人笑我不知足呢！”齐桓公觉得他很懂道理，便改聘为“工正”，请他担任管理各种工匠的职务。但是对他的待遇，仍不同于一般官员。齐桓公经常找他谈天、游玩。

有一次，齐桓公到敬仲家里去，敬仲拿出酒来招待他，桓公喝得很高兴，直到天快黑了，还叫点灯，要继续喝。敬仲婉言劝止，说道：“臣卜其昼，未卜其夜，不敢！（我只准备白天陪您玩，却没有打算继续到夜晚，恕我不敢久留您！）”

由于这段故事，后来形容游宴无度，不计时间，从白昼到黑夜，又从黑夜到白昼，连续不休地玩乐，就叫“卜昼卜夜”
