犬马之劳的典故

太平兴国八年（983年），赵普年事已高，调任武胜军节度使、检校太尉兼侍中，太宗作诗为他辞行，赵普手捧诗稿潸然泪下，对太宗说：“陛下赐给臣的诗，应镌刻在石碑上，和我的老骨头一起埋到黄泉之下。”太宗为之动情。第二天，太宗对宰相说：“赵普是国家的功臣，我从前和他一起交游，现在头发白了，牙齿也脱落了，不应再用军国重务来烦劳他，我为他选了个好地方，让他养尊处优，借着赠诗表达我的慰问惜别之情，赵普感激泪下，我也伤感地为之流下了眼泪。”宰相告诉太宗：“赵普昨天来到中书省，手持御制诗歌，对臣涕泣说，我这一辈子来日无多，无从报答皇上的恩德，但愿来世再为国家效犬马之劳。臣昨天听了赵普的话，对照今天陛下的圣意，君臣名分能够如此善始善终，可谓两全其美了。”
