春秋时期，孔子带领弟子们周游列国，从陈国逃往蔡国后，也没得到蔡君的重用，常发“饱食终日，无所用心”的感慨，一天发现弟子宰予中午还在睡大觉，气得说宰予是朽木不可雕，弟子们赶紧来安慰孔子，孔子说今后听其言而观其行，好自为之。
