东汉末年，曹操出兵攻打汉中张鲁，益州牧刘璋听从张松的说辞，派法正去荆州请刘备入蜀。法正向刘备献计献策，刘备在刘璋死后取益州建立蜀国，任命法正为蜀郡太守。法正大报个人恩怨。诸葛亮说刘备担心变生肘腋，报恩才任命法正。
