木梗之患的典故

孟尝君准备西入秦国，劝阻的人极多，但他一概不听。苏秦也想劝他，孟尝君却说：“人世的事情，我都知道了；我所没有听说过的，只有鬼怪之事了。”苏秦说：“我这次来，确实也不敢谈人间的事情，而是专门和殿下讨论鬼神的事。”

孟尝君就接见苏秦。苏秦说：“我这次来齐国，路上经过淄水，听见一个泥土捏成的土偶和一个桃木刻成的木梗交谈。木梗对土偶说：‘你原是淄水西岸的泥土，被捏成了人，到了八月，天下大雨，淄水涨上来，你就残缺不全了。’土偶说：‘你的话不对啊。我是西岸的泥土，即使为大水毁了也仍然是西岸的泥土。可你是东方桃木刻成的，天下大雨，淄水横流，你随波而去，还不知道要被冲到哪里呢？’那秦国是个虎狼之国，关山四塞，殿下到了秦国，我不知道殿下能否安然出来。”孟尝君就打消了去秦国的念头。
