战国时期，孟子教导他的学生不要做自暴自弃的人，学生不明白。孟子解释道自暴就是说话不遵守礼义，自己残害自己。自弃就是心里想的不是仁义，自己抛弃自己。仁是最安适的住宅，义是最正确的道路，一切都得按仁义来办。
