隋朝初年，治书侍御史李谔文章写得好，口才也好。他担心受南北朝时期华美浮艳文风的影响，只注重华丽词藻、吟风嘲月的人因此而受到重用，这是失却根本，追逐枝节。朝廷不能选拔真正的人才，他的上书没有得到重视。
