公元866年，32岁的皮日休去京城长安考进士，由于他不愿奉承权贵，结果没考上。第二年他又进京应试，主考官礼部侍郎郑愚很欣赏他的文章，还没发榜就叫他到府上，见他其貌不扬，眼睛不对称就讥笑他，皮日休立即反唇相讥回敬。
