春秋时期，吴王夫差的女儿紫玉爱上有才华的平民韩重。韩重将祖传的紫玉送给紫玉姑娘。夫差发现此事，将前来王宫求婚的韩重父母赶跑，逼紫玉嫁给一个贵族。紫玉气死，韩重到紫玉的墓前。紫玉的灵魂唱道：南山有鸟，北山张罗。
