春秋末年，吴王夫差准备出兵伐齐，越王勾践带臣子及厚礼来朝见，夫差特别高兴。伍子胥认为出兵伐齐，作用不大，当前越国是吴国的心腹之患。夫差根本不听。没过几年，越国趁吴国北上伐晋国时出兵伐吴，将吴国彻底打败。
