杜贵墀（1824-1901年），字吉阶，别字仲丹，巴陵县郭镇磨刀村杜家庄（今属湖南岳阳市岳阳楼区）人。天资卓越，性情“沉敏”，深得从祖父杜棠的喜爱。杜棠到山西任职时，将年仅4岁的贵墀带到任所，学习四书五经及句读。贵墀6岁丧母，9岁丧父，13岁回到家乡，与长兄杜伯崇相依为命，继续勤奋苦读，精研诗词和古文，力求博学实用，不争虚名，为日后的经史研究奠定了深厚的基础。
