新罗国(今朝鲜南部)僧人。玄宗时经西域至五天竺求法。开元十五年(727)行至安西。著有《往五天竺国传》3卷，慧琳《一切经音义》为其作音义。原书不存。敦煌遗书伯三五三二存此书残卷，约数千字，其中存其自作诗5首，《全唐诗外编》及《全唐诗续拾》收之。事迹即据此残卷，并参罗振玉《雪堂校刊群书叙录》卷下。
