译文
我们不曾见面就早已知道姓名，这次意外相聚让我格外惊奇。
你的才华一定会长久流传，我有幸晚年见到你也不算晚了。
二月的苏堤涨着春水，我曾像杜牧一般风流，如今却已鬓边生白。
一赏西湖一见你，不枉费我这里游玩啊。
注释
1、袁子才：即袁枚，字子才。
2、良会：美好的会见。
3、意外奇：指两人意外相聚。
4、苏堤：在杭州西湖中。传为北宋元丰年间苏轼于杭州任职时疏浚西湖，堆泥筑堤，故名。
5、杜牧三生：杜牧，晚唐著名诗人，风流多才，比喻袁枚。三生，指前生、今生、来生。
6、鬓有丝：鬓发花白。此年袁枚六十三岁。
7、才子：指袁枚。
8、端：真正。
9、枉：白费。

西湖晤袁子才喜赠创作背景
此诗作于乾隆四十四年（1779）。是年春作者游杭州西湖，与神交已久的袁枚意外相逢，欣喜万分，相聚数日，乃有此诗。

西湖晤袁子才喜赠鉴赏
首联写诗人与袁枚不期而遇。诗人与袁枚知交已久，这次相遇正是出乎意料之外的奇迹，而自己的欢快之情溢于言表。
颔联赞叹袁枚卓越的才华，必将流传永久，因而自己有幸于晚年得见这位名高一代的诗人也并不嫌太晚。此时赵翼五十三岁，袁枚已六十三岁，所以称老，而这次会面又在风光旖旎的西子湖畔，更有诗情画意。
颈联写二月西湖涨春水，苏堤沉浸在春光之中。在此景中，风流如杜牧的袁枚此时鬓边已有了白发。这两句形象地再现出当日两位诗人见面时的情景。“望湖楼下水如天”，那浩淼无际的水势正如二月的眷光，不仅充溢于天地之间，而且也漾溢在诗人的心头。眼前这位两鬓花白而风流倜傥的才子便是自己心仪已久的随园主人，怎不使诗人欣慰，所以说西湖与袁枚一样足以令他觉得不虚此行，甚至连游程的花费电不冤枉了。
尾联将西湖和袁枚系为一体，点明诗人喜悦心情。将西湖与袁枚联系在一起，非常浅切，却别开生面，“不枉游资”云云虽语带戏谑，却也体现了袁、赵二人之间的友谊是真诚的。这一次的聚会是欢愉的，在两位诗人心中都留下了美好的回忆。袁枚也有诗记载此事，中有“西湖天为两人生”之句，表现了同样轻快戏谑的笔调。
赵翼的诗明白清通，追求一种朴实平易的美感，如这一首通篇没有僻字涩句，也不用浓艳的词藻、艰深的典故，冲口而出，然不乏佳句。“才可”二句意在称扬袁枚的才华出众，然也带出白首相逢的情景，“苏堤”二句于通篇议论之中插入形象的描绘，令景物与人融合无间，都于平淡中含有深味，令人难忘。赵翼诗的另一特点是诙谐幽默，如此首中“老犹得见未嫌迟”等诸句中都显然有一种风趣的精神，或表现旷达的胸襟，或抒写真率的友情。

赵翼（1727年～1814年1月10日）清代文学家、史学家。字云崧，一字耘崧，号瓯北，又号裘萼，晚号三半老人，汉族，江苏阳湖（今江苏省常州市）人。乾隆二十六年进士。官至贵西兵备道。旋辞官，主讲安定书院。长于史学，考据精赅。论诗主“独创”，反摹拟。五、七言古诗中有些作品，嘲讽理学，隐寓对时政的不满之情，与袁枚、张问陶并称清代性灵派三大家。所著《廿二史札记》与王鸣盛《十七史商榷》、钱大昕《二十二史考异》合称清代三大史学名著。
