译文
潜伏的鱼希望藏身在幽渺的地方，渊水澄明鱼儿无处可逃。
彭泽县曾经在古时，埋没了陶渊明这盖世英豪。
汉室刘姓制作礼乐，到司马氏手中已衰微非常。
中年以后陶渊明只用字号，要重振朝纲字号唤作元亮。
凄怆地缅怀汉相诸葛，刚直倔强的个性也和他相仿。
可惜当世没有益州太守刘备，能够任用贤才指挥良将。
致使渊明平生徒存安邦定国的心愿，却只好把岁月消磨在江湖之上。
空留下精工的诗篇，好像从九天落笔美妙非常。
从古到今不是没有可敬的人，独有渊明最值得交友、景仰。
不巧正遇我刚刚戒酒，因此不能斟杯酒向他献上。
想要招回他千年以前的灵魂，或许这首诗倒还适宜、妥当。
注释
⑴“渊明”句：用“水清无鱼”之意。《大戴礼·子张问入官》：“水至清则无鱼，人至察则无徒。”谓水太清则鱼不能藏身，人过于苛察，则不能容于众。
⑵“彭泽”二句：彭泽，彭泽县，陶渊明曾任彭泽县令。沉冥（míng），泯灭无迹。一世豪：陶渊明原有用世之心，志大才高，却被埋没于微官，其《感士不遇赋》云：“自真风告逝，大伪斯兴，闾阎懈廉退之节，市朝驱易进之心。怀正志道之士，或潜玉于当年；洁己清操之人，或没世以徒勤。”赋云：“虽怀琼而握兰，徒芳洁而谁亮！”
⑶“司马”二句：按诗意本当为“礼乐卯金刀，司马寒如灰”，意谓汉高祖刘邦命萧何制礼作乐，至司马氏掌天下的晋代，尤其至陶渊明生活的东晋末世，礼乐废丧，已如死灰难以复燃。卯金刀，为“刘”字。
⑷以字行：陶渊明，字元亮。一说名潜字渊明。
⑸更始：重新开始，《庄子·盗跖》：“与天下更始，罢兵休卒。”此指重新恢复礼乐。
⑹“凄其”句：南朝宋谢灵运《初发石首城》诗：“怀贤亦凄其”，此化用其意。凄其，寒凉。其，词尾。此形容情绪凄怆。诸葛，指三国时蜀汉宰相诸葛亮。
⑺肮（āng）脏：刚直倔强貌。犹：如同。汉相：即指诸葛亮。
⑻时：当世。益州牧：指刘备（162-223），字玄德，河北涿县人。东汉末，先后任安喜尉、高唐令等。后为徐州牧。刘备善用贤士良将，得诸葛亮辅佐，联合孙权，大败曹操于赤壁。因取荆州，并得刘璋益州（今大多属四川）及汉中。后称帝，建立蜀汉政权。牧，指太守。
⑼本朝心：指匡扶晋室之心。
⑽“落笔”句：化用杜甫《寄李十二白二十韵》“笔落惊风雨”句意。九天，极言其高。《孙子·形》：“善攻者，动于九天之上。”
⑾“向来”二句：《孟子·万章》下：“以友天下之善士为未足，又尚论古之人，颂其诗，读其书，不知其人可乎？是以论其世，是尚友也。”此化用其意。尚友，上与古人为友。尚，通“上”。
⑿属：适值，恰好。制酒，止酒，戒酒。
⒀无用：无以。酌（zhuó）：斟酒，此指以酒祭献。杯盎（àng），泛指酒器。盎，一种大腹敛口之盆。
⒁斯文：此文，即指此诗。

宿旧彭泽怀陶令创作背景
此诗作于宋神宗元丰三年（1080）冬，是时山谷由北京移知吉州太和县，路经彭泽县，追忆缅怀曾在此地担任过县令的陶渊明，遂作此诗。黄庭坚一直认为孝友忠信是做人的根本。本着这一信念，他对陶渊明作了与众不同的评价。

宿旧彭泽怀陶令鉴赏
开篇二句，一般均以为是释陶令名字之义，即虽想潜藏而不能逃于渊。然而这样解释与下文意思不连贯。南宋吴仁杰《陶靖节先生年谱》谓深眇则易潜居，如果潭渊明澈见底，就无法藏身，故陶令晚年改名为潜。山谷此处用《庄子·庚桑楚》中的典故：“故鸟兽不厌高，鱼鳖不厌深。夫全其形生之人，藏其身也，不厌深眇而已矣。”下面二句说陶渊明本是一世豪杰，但为彭泽令仅八十多天就弃官归隐了。山谷称他为“一世豪”是言之有据的。他少年时代即“猛志逸四海，中年时常叹惜“有志不获骋”，老年时代犹“猛志故常在帮，可见平生抱有经世济民之大志。而他又晦迹不任了，山谷认为是由于意即司马氏的东晋王朝，此时已如冷却之灰烬，而刘裕则已擅政治，军事之大权。刘氏擅权，乱世无道，所以向令就决意沉冥了。山谷以蜀庄来比陶令，颂扬其能保持高风亮节。
山谷这样称颂陶令是以某些史书作根据的。沈约《宋书·陶潜传》云：“自以曾祖晋世宰辅，耻复屈身异代，自高祖王业渐隆，不复肯仕。”他的曾祖父陶侃是东晋开国元勋，官至大司马。作为陶侃后裔，他依恋旧朝，不愿仕宋，亦在情理之中。但沈约此说早就有人表示怀疑。陶令在晋安帝义熙元年（405）自彭泽辞官归田时，刘裕刚以一个地位不高的武将，临时被推为八州都督，初掌朝政，下距晋、宋易代之时（420）还有十五年。不能说他辞官的原因就是“耻复屈身异代”，即使他当时对刘裕不满，也不可能预见刘裕将来篡晋的结局。山谷博闻强识，熟悉史乘，其取沈约说是蔽于儒家忠孝观念。山谷此说对后世颇有影响，自南宋起盛行以“忠愤”来解释陶令后期的作品，是与山谷此诗分不开的。
“岁晚以字行，更始号元亮”诗意是说陶令在晋时名潜字渊明，刘裕篡位后即以渊明为名，更号为元亮，自别于晋宋之间。吴仁杰《陶靖节先生年谱》早就指出，山谷此二句是承《南史·隐逸传》的“潜字渊明”之误。实际上陶令在晋时名渊明，字元亮，在宋时始更名潜，仍字元亮。最有说服力的证据，是颜延之的《陶征士诔》曾云：“有晋聘士陶渊明。”既以陶令为晋臣，则宜用其旧名渊明。颜延之与陶令是知交，所作哀悼亡友之《诔》，用名不应有误。山谷以“虑愤”目渊明，自然采取《南史》的说法。陶令在晋时已号元亮，而山谷却生出“更始号元亮“一说，这是为了借题发挥，便于把陶令塑造成理想人物。
他说陶令更号是欲以蜀汉丞相诸葛亮自比，要兴复汉室，汉、贼誓不两立。但晋宋易代，诸臣竞相趋附，陶令看到向于旧朝的人并不多，他的心情是凄苦的。虽说是凄苦，但他仍然“肮脏”，即刚强不屈。山谷惋惜当时无益州牧，即刘备，渊明遂不能成就诸葛亮的勋业。在中国文学史上，山谷此诗首次以诸葛亮比渊明，实属创见。清代诗人龚自珍亦云“渊明酷似卧龙豪”，可以说是从此诗得到启发。
渊明虽一心忠于本朝，但岁月流逝，壮志未酬，只有好诗流传下来。渊明的诗文，在南朝时并不受重视，到了唐代才普遍受到赞誉。其文名至宋而极，苏轼追和陶诗百余首，称为曹刘李杜所不及，山谷此诗，称其为“落笔九天上”。由于尊崇渊明的“忠愤”和诗文，故山谷云：这就是说，古人中有许多可与之为友，其中以渊明为最。尚友说出自《孟子·万章下》的话，可以说是山谷写此诗的圭臬，意即上与古人为友，要读懂他的诗文，必须了解他的为人，了解他所处的时代。经过全面考察，山谷认为渊明最值得自己尊敬。本应酌杯祭奠，正遇上自己戒酒，此礼也就免了。结句是说自己仿《楚辞·招魂》，写此诗是为了召唤渊明的灵魂。
宋人魏泰曾云：“黄庭坚喜作诗得名，好用南朝人语，专求古人未使之事，又一二奇字，缀葺而成诗，自以为工，其实所见之僻也。故旬虽新奇，面气乏浑厚。”（《临汉隐居诗话》）他与山谷是同时代人，上述的一段话虽贬黄诗，但用来评论山谷此首怀陶令诗的得失，却大体恰当。

黄庭坚（1045.8.9-1105.5.24），字鲁直，号山谷道人，晚号涪翁，洪州分宁（今江西省九江市修水县）人，北宋著名文学家、书法家，为盛极一时的江西诗派开山之祖，与杜甫、陈师道和陈与义素有“一祖三宗”（黄庭坚为其中一宗）之称。与张耒、晁补之、秦观都游学于苏轼门下，合称为“苏门四学士”。生前与苏轼齐名，世称“苏黄”。著有《山谷词》，且黄庭坚书法亦能独树一格，为“宋四家”之一。
