译文
我回首眺望，只见长江外青山数点，江水浩浩茫茫，无际无边。长满芦苇的岸旁，小船来来往往，穿梭不断。又到了黄昏时分，林子罩上了一层暮烟。篱边的黄菊经秋霜而凋谢，而我日益拮据，一天天消耗着行囊中不多的金钱。那暮色中的捣衣声常常扰乱了我的情怀，檐下铁马叮咚作响，使我肝肠寸断；而清冷的晓钟声，又无数次惊破了我的梦，再也无法入眠。要回家是那样的艰难，我只能写一封信，报上“平安”两字，以抚慰家人对我的惦念。

这一支“旅中”，实际上包括了旅程的两种情味。前四句的醉高歌是在舟船的动行中，而后七句的摊破喜春来则是泊岸后的旅宿。行、宿的感受是不尽相同的。
醉高歌记行，主要通过景物描写来反映心情。作者笔下出现了长江和远山，江中来往着大小船只，也包括诗人自己乘坐的航船，江岸的近处为大片的芦苇，远处是一道道树林。从长江的远映青山、难穷望眼，反映了作者已在江上行过漫长的途程；江流浩瀚，扁舟来往，这一切都会牵惹起“旅中”强烈的漂泊情绪；而“烟锁云林又晚”，呈现出一派暮气沉沉的客乡景象，“又晚”的“又”字还带有羁旅日久、光阴蹉跎的感慨意味。笔墨虽然不多，却写出了旅中浪迹天涯的一重客愁。
摊破喜春来也有写景，但更多地直接结合着作者的感想。“篱边”句点出深秋的节令，“囊底青蚨逐日悭”，则述出了客中困顿失意的处境。接着，诗人用三句鼎足对，细绘了旅宿中不寐的伤心情状。造成他彻夜难眠的，是“晚砧”、“檐马”、“晓钟”的声响，平白增重了诗人的孤寂感和失落感。这种孤苦的情味，是旅中孤独凄清的又一重客愁的表现。前一重客愁还能假借行程中的景物作为散虑的寄托，而在长夜止宿中，所表现出的旅愁就只能任它凝聚在心头了。
结尾两句，是在晓钟惊梦的挨守中，起身修写家书的情景。这一笔看似寻常，细细体味，却是饱含辛酸。诗人吐出“归去难”，这一沉重的现实已是不堪；而他还要向遥远的亲人掩饰真相，强自“回两字报平安”，其苦心孤诣就不能不使读者更觉震动了。
