你是何处的名僧来到水西山，乘着扁舟而赏月，宿于泾溪。
天亮时分与我只别去上山，手持禅仗去攀登山中蹬道。
向上腾起身体顿觉离天很近，抬足向回而视只见众多的山岭很低很低。
戏谑放浪哪里肯居支遁之下，风流俊赏与远公慧远而齐名。
你我此番别离何日才能相见，相思难眠唯听得猿声阵阵。
注释
水西：即水西山，在泾县西五里。
平明：天明、天亮。
金策：禅仗。
三天：佛教称色界、欲界、无色界为三天。这里是指高空。
支遁：晋代名僧，常隐于剡中，不游人事。好养鹰马，而不乘故，人或讥之。遁曰：“贫道爱其神骏。”见《世说·言语》注。
远公：即慧远，晋名僧。居庐山东林寺，与刘遗民、宗炳、慧水等结白莲社，净土宗推为初祖。

别山僧创作背景
《别山僧》是天宝十三、十四载（753—754）间李白游宣州泾县（今安徽）之水西寺所作。其时李白游泾县，于水西寺与寺僧游，临别作此诗，李白另有《寻山僧不遇作》诗，题中“山僧”或当与此诗中之“山僧”为一人。

别山僧鉴赏
李白自从天宝三载辞京还山后，便浪迹天涯，过着游山览水，访僧问道、纵情诗酒的漫游生活，在天宝末年，他在皖南宣州（今安徵宣城）一带，盘桓最久，他为这里的山水风光和风土人情所迷恋。除了与山翁樵夫、屠沽渔商、隐士逸人相交往外，还常常走观串寺，广与和尚道士交朋友。和李白交游的僧人道士，一般都是些精通佛玄、能诗善文的诗僧、学问僧或有学识才情的道士。此诗中所赠别的“山僧”，即是这样的一位多才多艺、道行高深的名僧。
水西寺是唐代一所著名的寺院。此寺座落在安徽泾县城西。据《江南通志》记载，水西寺建在泾县西五里的水西山上。这里“林壑邃密，下临深溪，旧建宝胜、崇庆、白云三寺。浮屠对峙，楼阁参差，碧水浮烟，咫尺万状。”水西寺是对水西山三寺的泛指。宝胜寺又叫水西奇，白云寺又叫水西首寺，崇庆寺又叫天宫水西寺。历代名人多到此游览，一些游方的僧人也常封这里挂锡访学。李白所结识的这位山僧，就是外地的云游僧，他也和李白—样是到水西寺游访，二人因此才相逢相识。因此，此诗开头就写道：
“何处名僧到水西？”何处，并不表示诗人不知道这位僧人是从哪里来，而是说这位名僧不是此寺的僧人，而是从外地来的客僧。次句是说明这位僧人来自何方和来访的目的：“乘舟弄月宿泾溪”。“乘舟”一作“乘杯”。“乘舟”较为普通，“乘杯”更富有神奇色彩，以“乘杯”为善。既然诗中说的是位名僧，就应该有些传奇本领。传说刘宋时期有一位杯渡和尚，他能乘木杯渡水，无假风棹，轻疾如飞。此处说这位僧人也如同杯渡和尚一样，颇有灵异之气，是乘杯来到水西的。他来这里似乎不是为了学佛练禅，而是“弄月”。即他来泾溪是为了欣赏这里的风月美景。当然，高僧们不一定像普通和尚一样去坐禅诵经，苦苦修练，清风明月，无非禅心，只要有所妙悟，也一样能达到明心见性的目的。这也许就是高僧之所以高明之处。“宿泾溪”，泾溪就是在水西寺旁。不宿寺中而宿泾溪，足见此僧的脱俗之处。
第二天清晨此僧就与李白告别而去，手携锡杖上山走了。此僧来时是乘舟（或乘杯）顺水路而来，而分别时却走的山路。“金策”即锡杖，“云梯”，指的是山上的磴道。因远观登山，如登梯而上，高入云中，故云“踏云梯”。诗中不说此僧是扛着锡杖，沿着山中磴道攀山而去，这样写太平凡了，而是说他“手携金策踏云梯”，就把此僧的飘然之状，神异之色突现了出来。
这是从山僧站在山顶上的角度，来写他的感觉。仿佛他是腾身云中、离天宫很近，而回看千山万岭，却都在脚下。而更进一层的意思是借此来寓意此僧的佛学修养之高，说他已近佛界三天（佛教称欲界、色界、无色界为三天）中的最高天，而下视尘寰，远在脚下。以此来突出此僧道行的高深。紧接着后—联又顺手拉来历史上两位高僧来与此僧比较：是东晋时的高僧。他精通《庄子》和《维摩经》，常与当时名士殷浩、郗超交往。他为人放浪不羁、善于玄辩。
《世说新语》载：“支道林常养数匹马，或言道人畜马不韵，支曰：‘贫道重其神骏。’”远公指东晋高僧慧远，他博综六艺，尤善老庄，曾与陶渊明等名士三十多人结莲社，谈玄论道，吟诗作赋，颇有风流名士风度。为后代文人所赞赏。此联的意思是：此僧放浪形骸、谑浪口辩，风流名士的派头，足可以与慧远相提并论！李白将他与历史上的名僧相比，更是为了突出此僧的风度和才情。由此可见，此僧还是一位善于谈玄论道、诗酒风流的放浪人物，以致于与他萍水相逢的李白也对他赞赏有加。于此，一个佛学高深，诗酒啸傲，行迹诡异，举止不凡的高僧形象，已从诗中唤之欲出，廖廖数句就刻画出了一位神态飘洒的高僧。可见诗人的技巧之高超。
诗的尾联抒写了诗人对这位高僧的深切怀念。“此度别离何丑见，相思一夜瞑猿啼。”刚刚分别就想着何日能再见面。这样的朋友尤其是在僧人中的朋友，对李自来说不是很多的。“相思一夜”暗寓出李白因相思此友而一夜没有合眼。正是整夜相思不寐，所以李白才会感觉到夜间的哀猿一直在山间悲啼。而这哀猿的悲啼，更增加了诗人与朋友的相思离别之苦。虽然这首诗就在凄迷的夜猿声结束了，但是诗人对朋友的深厚友情，却深深地印在了读者的心上。
此诗是一首七言排律，这实在令人意想不到，一贯不愿受格律束缚的自由浪漫诗人的李白，却用七言排律写诗。李白这首七言排律，也和李白其他律诗一样，有“以古入律”的特点。

李白（701年－762年），字太白，号青莲居士，唐朝浪漫主义诗人，被后人誉为“诗仙”。祖籍陇西成纪(待考)，出生于西域碎叶城，4岁再随父迁至剑南道绵州。李白存世诗文千余篇，有《李太白集》传世。762年病逝，享年61岁。其墓在今安徽当涂，四川江油、湖北安陆有纪念馆。
