译文
自从与丈夫分别之后，一直是独自一人度过清净的夜晚。以前幸福的记忆，为何随便抛弃。纵然有丈夫的体香尚留在衣服上，就像郎留下的恩爱一样，奈何随着时间的消逝，这些也不知不觉消失了。
怕你不相信离别后昔日的漂亮容颜已经改变，将憔悴的样子画下来寄给你。更希望凭借寄给你的书信，让你看到字里行间的悲思之情。要知愁肠愁多少，请看丁香树，渐渐结满了丁香结。
注释
西施：词牌名，因咏西施而得名。柳永自度曲，《乐章集》注“仙吕调”。双调七十一字，前段七句四平韵，后段七句三平韵。
回步：返回。百花桥：元彻、柳实与仙女相会之处。《续仙传》载：唐元和初，元彻、柳实赴浙右省亲，遭遇海风飘至孤岛，幸得南溟夫人相助，以百花桥送二人出岛。桥长数百步，栏槛之上，皆有异花。
清宵：清静的夜晚。
凤衾（qīn）：绣有凤凰花饰的被子。鸳枕：绣有鸳鸯的枕头。
何事：为何，何故。等闲：随便。
馀香：残留的香气。馀，同“余”，用“余”意义可能混淆时，用“馀”以区分，多见古文。
向：怎奈。潜消：不知不觉地消逝。
霜绡（xiāo）：白绫。亦指画在白色绫子上的真容。唐玄宗《题梅妃画真》：“霜绡虽似当时态，争奈娇波不顾人。”
锦字：即“锦书”。《晋书·列女传》：“窦滔妻苏氏，始平人也，名蕙，字若兰，善属文。滔，苻坚时为秦州刺史，被徙流沙，苏氏思之，织锦为回文旋图诗以赠滔。宛转循环以读之，词甚凄惋。”后称妻子寄给丈夫的书信为锦书。
情憀（liáo）：悲思之情。
愁肠：忧思郁结的心肠。
丁香树：常绿乔木，又名鸡舌香，丁子香。丁香花蕾称丁香结，古代诗词常用以喻愁思固结不解。
春梢：春末，暮春。

此词为代闺怨体，写离别后妻子对丈夫的思念，而柳词大多写实，故而可以断定此词的女主人公乃柳永之妻。词中开头所用“百花桥”典故，发生地是在浙江，联系到柳永其他的词作，足以说明柳永此时所在之地为钱塘，时间为柳永第一次从汴京出发远游江浙的第二年。

此词写闺中相思之情。词上片开首即用“百花桥”典，以元彻、柳实离开后，“便独处清宵”为喻，别开生面。女主人公因为与情郎分别，在寂寞无奈中日日夜夜思念情郎、消磨时光。“凤衾鸳枕”二句写女主人公独守空闺，又加以反问语，其情之切由此可见一斑。“纵有”三句作先退一步想而后又进一层，写女主人公与情郎纵然“恩爱”，但就像“馀香”一般，开始能够留于衣物之上，时间一久，也在不知不觉中消逝了。虽抒相思，而相思之中又含声声哀怨，尽被词人以活脱脱的女子之口写出，逼真生动。
下片写女主人公的心理活动。“恐伊”二句为执着语，也是痴情语，与武则天《如意娘》一诗有异曲同工之妙。女主人公因为思念而日渐憔悴，却又害怕情郎“不信芳容改”，于是决定“将憔悴、写霜绡”。可是如果细细品来，这“不信”又似女主人公谴责情郎的薄情寡信之语。“更凭锦字”二句呼应下片开头一句，写女主人公寄书信于情郎，希望能够凭借书信，述说自己的“情憀”。最后三句：“要识愁肠，但看丁香树，渐结尽春梢。”化用李商隐《代赠二首》诗“芭蕉不展丁香结，同向春风各自愁”之句，以喻结情，形象生动，极有韵味。
这是一首描写一位佳丽与情郎在百花桥离别后，便日夜独守空房思念郎君的无尽愁绪的词。这不是一般的“怨妇”词，它有很明显的象征意义，折射了柳永的爱情世界。

柳永，（约987年—约1053年）北宋著名词人，婉约派代表人物。汉族，崇安（今福建武夷山）人，原名三变，字景庄，后改名永，字耆卿，排行第七，又称柳七。宋仁宗朝进士，官至屯田员外郎，故世称柳屯田。他自称“奉旨填词柳三变”，以毕生精力作词，并以“白衣卿相”自诩。其词多描绘城市风光和歌妓生活，尤长于抒写羁旅行役之情，创作慢词独多。铺叙刻画，情景交融，语言通俗，音律谐婉，在当时流传极其广泛，人称“凡有井水饮处，皆能歌柳词”，婉约派最具代表性的人物之一，对宋词的发展有重大影响，代表作 《雨霖铃》《八声甘州》。
