有鹦鹉飞集他山，山中禽兽辄相爱。鹦鹉自念虽乐，此山虽乐，然非吾久居之地，遂去，禽兽依依不舍后数月，山中大火。鹦鹉遥见，心急如焚，遂入水沾羽，飞而洒之。
天神言：“汝虽有好意，然何足道也？”对曰：“虽知区区水滴不能救，然吾尝侨居是山，禽兽善待，皆为兄弟，吾不忍见其毁于火也！”
天神嘉其义，即为之灭火。
鹦鹉灭火译文及注释
译文
有鹦鹉飞到其它山栖息， 山中的飞禽走兽都喜欢它。 鹦鹉想： 在这山虽然快乐，但不是我长时间居住的地方， 就离开了。
好几个月后， 山中起大火， 鹦鹉远远地看见， 心里急得像在焚烧，于是用水沾湿羽毛，飞过去洒向山。
天神说:"你虽然有好的心意，但又有什么用呢?"
鹦鹉回答:"我虽然知道一点点的水不能救它们。但是我曾经寄居在这座山， 飞禽走兽友好地对待我如同兄弟， 我只是不忍心看见它们被大火烧死罢了!"
天上的神赞扬它的行为， 立即为它熄灭了大火。

鹦鹉灭火鉴赏
1.帮助他人，不在于力量的大小，而在于显示一片诚心。有人捐一元钱帮助病重的同学，有人出五十万支援受灾的百姓，各尽其力，这“义”的分量是相当的。
2.尽心尽力去做看似无用的事情，而以诚心感动了他人并得到帮助。
3.人要有毅力，不管这股力量是多么的微小，持之以恒的应对，一定会有回报的。
4.一个人要靠自己的力量去完成一件艰巨的任务是不容易的，如果有贵人相助就简单得多，但是贵人（天神）并不是随意帮助别人的，所谓天助自助者，自己不努力，是不能寄望得到别人的帮助；如果所从事的任务是基于一项伟大的情操，则更容易得到别人的帮助，大家一起共襄盛举。
5.我们要知恩图报,不要忘恩负义。
6.常怀一颗感恩的心，善待亲人，善待友人，善待路人……你会收获更多。
7动物也有灵性,它们就像人一样,也是通感情的,所以我一向都尊重每一个生命.总觉得我们的一举一动都在它们的眼下,而它们对我们总是一次又一次的包容,一次又一次的忍让.其实它们才是自然中最伟大的,而并非人类最伟大.
8有时候人会被感官所迷惑,但动物却很少出现这中情况.因为它们真正的用上了心去感受世界,用真心去爱护这个我们赖以生存的世界.所以"神"才会被它们所感动,所以大自然报复的往往也只是不爱护它的人类...

刘义庆（403—444）汉族，彭城（今江苏徐州）人。字季伯，南北朝文学家。自幼才华出众，爱好文学，并广招四方文学之士，聚于门下。刘宋宗室，袭封临川王，公元444年（元嘉21年）死于建康（今南京）。除《世说新语》外，还著有志怪小说《幽明录》。
