译文
站在南楼上靠着栏杆向四周远望，只见山色和水色连接在一起，辽阔的水面上菱角、荷花盛开，飘来阵阵香气。清风明月没有人看管自由自在，月光融入清风从南面吹来，使人感到一片凉爽和惬意。
注释
鄂（è）州：在今湖北省武汉、黄石一带。南楼：在武昌蛇山顶。
四顾：向四周望去。山光、水光：山色、水色。
凭栏：靠着栏杆。十里：形容水面辽阔。芰（jì）：菱角。
并：合并在一起。一味凉：一片凉意。
鄂州南楼书事鉴赏
《鄂州南楼书事》描述的情景是：武昌的夏天，热得可怕。那天晚上，诗人登上高高的南楼乘凉。他倚栏而望，明月已近中天，皎洁的清辉倾泻而下。四面的山光与水光相连相映，一片通明；方圆十数里、盛开着芰（菱）花、荷花，凉爽的夜风中，不断有淡淡的芳香扑面而来。习习清风，朗朗明月，谁也不能对它们管束驱遗，它们慷慨、殷勤地为南楼送来清清爽爽的夜凉，供游人称心快意地消受啊！
欣赏这首小诗，读者很容易忘记自身的处境，仿佛自己也登上南楼来乘凉了。这样的感觉是这样来的。先从外界景象来看：四外山水落石出，十里芰荷，楼头清风，空中明月，远方近处，天上地下，以南楼为中心，构成一个高远、清空、富有立体感的艺术境界。再从自身感受来说：山光、水光、月光，是眼睛的视觉所感到的；芰花、荷花的香气，是鼻子的嗅觉所感到的；清风——夜凉，是皮肤的触觉以及耳朵的听觉听感到的；而“南楼一味凉”的“味”字，还隐含着口舌的味觉在起作用，好像在那里细细地美美地品尝一般。总之，读者的眼睛、鼻子、耳朵、口舌、皮肤种种器官司的视觉、嗅觉、听觉、味觉、触觉种种功能，统统被调动起来，集中起来，共同参与对这南楼夜景的感觉、领略、体验。此景此情，令人生出如临其境的感受，成了自然而然的事。这便是作品的艺术魅力，诗人的艺术追求了。
黄庭坚一生，道路崎岖坎坷，由于遭受人陷害中伤，曾贬官司蜀中六年之久；召回才几个月，又被罢官司来武昌闲居。当夜纳凉南楼，眼见明月清风，无拘无束，各行其是，想到自己每欲有所作为，却是动辄得罪，怅恨之情，于是潜滋暗长。“清风明月无人管”，正是诗人这种心绪的自然流露。

黄庭坚（1045.8.9-1105.5.24），字鲁直，号山谷道人，晚号涪翁，洪州分宁（今江西省九江市修水县）人，北宋著名文学家、书法家，为盛极一时的江西诗派开山之祖，与杜甫、陈师道和陈与义素有“一祖三宗”（黄庭坚为其中一宗）之称。与张耒、晁补之、秦观都游学于苏轼门下，合称为“苏门四学士”。生前与苏轼齐名，世称“苏黄”。著有《山谷词》，且黄庭坚书法亦能独树一格，为“宋四家”之一。
