译文
一清早我就对镜梳妆，妆成后却又忍不住犹豫徘徊。
古人千金才买美人一笑，陛下一纸诏书就能把我召来吗？
注释
镜台：上面装着镜子的梳妆台。
裴回：即”徘徊”，比喻犹豫不决。
千金一笑：即一笑千金，美女一笑，价值千金。形容美人一笑很难得。
讵：副词。岂，难道。
进太宗创作背景
唐太宗曾下召让徐惠去见驾，她过了很久还没到，唐太宗非常生气。她因此献了这首诗：“朝来临镜台，妆罢暂徘徊。千金始一笑，一召讵能来？”唐太宗见后大悦，怒气一下子全消了。

进太宗鉴赏
徐惠的《进太宗》又名曰《妆殿答太宗》，是在皇帝屡召不赴情况下写就的一首难得表现作者“女儿性”的作品。
“朝来临镜台，妆罢暂徘徊”。前两句虽然不着一墨写作者如何梳妆，却让佳人对镜的优雅美态如在眼前，颇见功力。在数以千百计的后宫妃嫔中，得到君王的宣诏，本应喜悦之极应命而至。就封建文化要求女子“柔顺”、不得违抗君命的“角色规范”而言，更应该立即应诏。可徐惠却偏要君王等一等，“妆罢”后久久不去应诏，反而要在镜台前徘徊不前，故意要引逗得君王着急。等到君王真的因急生怒，她似乎又早料到了，慌不忙的借“千金一笑”的典故，戏谑地反问太宗：“古人千金买美人一笑，陛下传召我一次，我能来吗？”
徐惠的问句，不但平息了君王的火气，也向读者呈现了一位体态婀娜、不胜罗绮的艳丽宫妃，在君王面前不屈己、不媚人的独立形象。“后妃宫女拂逆君主的行为，并非完全出于手段，出于自觉意识，多数因性气所致。”由此可见徐惠的机智活泼的女儿性情，以及太宗与她之间亲昵深厚的情思。
徐惠以轻松的笔调写下了她和太宗之间这段富于情趣的小插曲，在强调庄严又玄妙的“后妃之德”的后《诗经》时代，突然冒出“千金始一笑，一召讵能来”这样充满灵性的诗句，是徐惠的天性和才华使然。后人曾作诗赞这首《进太宗》：“拟就离骚早负才，妆成把镜且徘徊。美人一笑千金重，莫怪君王召不来。”

徐惠（公元627年―公元650年），湖州长城人（今长兴人)，唐太宗李世民的妃嫔。生于贞观元年（公元627年）。年少时便才华出众。唐太宗听说后，将她纳为才人。后被封为婕妤，接着又升为充容。贞观末年，唐太宗频起征伐、广修宫殿。徐惠上疏极谏，剖析常年征伐、大兴土木之害。唐太宗认可了她的看法并对她厚加赏赐。贞观二十三年（公元649年），唐太宗驾崩，徐惠哀慕成疾，不肯服药，又作七言诗和连珠以示爱慕。永徽元年（公元650年）病逝，年仅二十四，被追封贤妃，陪葬昭陵石室。
