译文
临近分别的时候牵着止夫的衣服问道：这次你到哪儿去？
我不会责怪你回来迟了，你千万不要到临邛那里去。
注释
古别离：新乐府歌曲名。
临邛：唐代郡县名，蜀中商业重镇，今四川邛崃。《史记·司马相如列传》：临邛的富豪卓王孙之女卓文君新寡，司马相如以琴心挑之，因私奔相如。故古代诗文多以临邛为花花世界。
古别离鉴赏
诗的开头“欲别”二字，紧扣题中“别离”，同时也为以下人物的言行点明背景。“牵郎衣”的主语自然是诗中的女主人公，她之所以要“牵郎衣”，主要是为了使“欲别”将行的丈夫能暂停片刻，听一听她诉说自己的心里话；另外，从这急切、娇憨的动作中，也流露出女主人公对丈夫的依恋亲密之情。
女主人公一边牵着郎衣，一边娇憨地问：“郎今到何处”？在一般情况下，千言万语都该在临行之前说过了，至少也不会等到“欲别”之际才问“到何处”，这似乎不合常规。但是，联系第四句来看，便可知道使她忐忑不安的并不是不知“到何处”的问题，而是担心他去“临邛”，那才是她真正急于要说而又一直难于启齿的话。“郎今到何处”，问得多余，却又问得巧妙。
第三句宕开一笔，转到归期，按照常情，该是盼郎早归，然而她却偏说“不恨”。这个“不恨”，联系到第四句中诗人引用司马相如和卓文君的典故，便可知她是怕男主人公去觅新欢。可见“不恨归来迟”，隐含着女子痛苦的真情，“不恨”，不是反语，也不是矫情，而是真情，是愿以两地相思的痛苦赢得彼此永远相爱的真情，她先如此真诚地让一步，献上一颗深情诚挚的心，最后再道出那难以启齿的希望和请求“莫向临邛去”。其用心之良苦，可谓“诗从肺腑出，出则愁肺腑”（苏轼《读孟东野诗》）。
诗的前三句拐弯抹角，都是为了引出第四句，第四句才是“谜底”，才是全诗的出发点和归宿，只有抓住它才能真正地领会前三句，咀嚼出全诗的情韵。
诗人用这种回环婉曲、欲进先退、摇曳生情的笔触，熟练而又细腻地刻画出女主人公在希求美满爱情生活的同时又隐含着忧虑不安的心理，并从这个矛盾之中显示了她的坚贞诚挚、隐忍克制的品格。全诗言简意丰，隽永深厚，耐人寻味。

孟郊，(751～814)，唐代诗人。字东野。汉族，湖州武康（今浙江德清）人，祖籍平昌（今山东临邑东北），先世居洛阳（今属河南）。唐代著名诗人。现存诗歌500多首，以短篇的五言古诗最多，代表作有《游子吟》。有“诗囚”之称，又与贾岛齐名，人称“郊寒岛瘦”。元和九年，在阌乡(今河南灵宝)因病去世。张籍私谥为贞曜先生。
