凌廷堪（1755－1809），字仲子，一字次仲。安徽歙县人。少赋异禀，读书一目十行，年幼家贫，凌廷堪弱冠之年方才开始读书。稍长，工诗及骈散文，兼为长短句。仰慕其同乡江永、戴震学术，于是究心于经史。乾隆五十四年（1790）应江南乡试中举，次年中进士，例授知县，自请改为教职，入选宁国府学教授。之后因其母丧到徽州，曾一度主讲敬亭、紫阳二书院，后因阮元聘请，为其子常生之师。晚年下肢瘫痪，毕力著述十余年。
