公元1249年（淳祐九年）旧历十二月，朝廷诏吴潜同知枢密院事兼参知政事，并于第二年赴阙。根据词题，此词作于朝廷下诏之后，吴潜赴阙之前。

“天街”三句，言京城临安的接官街道已经洒扫清净，明月掩映下的皇宫里，皇上也在等候着吴潜尽快来京任职。“天街”，即京城街道；“建章宫”，本汉宫殿名，这里泛指皇宫。“人未归来”，两句，言吴潜的人还没有抵达京城，但他能干的声名早已名闻京师。“玉树”句，“玉树”美材之喻，如《世说·容止》：“魏明帝使后弟毛曾与夏侯玄共坐，时人谓兼葭倚玉树”。又杜甫《饮中八仙歌》赞萧宗之云：“宗之潇洒美少年，举觞白眼望青天，皎如玉树临风前。”上述是其出典处。“宝粟”三句，言用片片宝玉拼镶成的宝粟灯一盏盏高悬在宫阙前，在秋风中闪烁。皇上派使者送来官带赐给吴潜，催促他从速经水路赴京城到任。当时，吴潜正在绍兴任上。
“夜凉”三句，转而写送别夜宴。言秋夜沉沉，虽然凉意不断透过门帘袭向宴会中人，但是宴席正趋在高潮中，大家酒杯交觞，频频向吴大人祝贺，酒酣耳热之时，从词人的醉眼中环视四周景物，都已处在雾蒙蒙一片模糊之中。“钗列”两句。“腰褭”，即要褭。《汉书·武帝本纪》应劭曰：“古有骏马名要褭（音袅），赤喙黑身，一日行万五千里。”“金虫”，指金龟。据《旧唐书·舆服志》云：“三品以上龟袋以金饰，四品以银饰，五品以铜饰。”李商隐《为有》诗中有：“无端嫁得金龟婿，辜负香衾事早朝。”即指身穿官服的夫婿。此处即是以金龟指代官服。此言酒宴上虽有成群姣娘侍立一旁侑酒助兴，但吴潜入朝用的官服与马匹都已准备妥当，随时在催促吴大人赶路。真是“世无不散之筵”也。“三十六宫”三句，承前感叹语。此处是说：皇宫肃穆壮严，现在同样都沉浸在秋夜融融的月色之中，这送别的盛宴虽情深意厚，终究留不住吴大人遵诏命身穿官服入朝为官去啊。

吴文英（约1200～1260），字君特，号梦窗，晚年又号觉翁，四明（今浙江宁波）人。原出翁姓，后出嗣吴氏。与贾似道友善。有《梦窗词集》一部，存词三百四十余首，分四卷本与一卷本。其词作数量丰沃，风格雅致，多酬答、伤时与忆悼之作，号“词中李商隐”。而后世品评却甚有争论。
