译文
幽美的庭院里住着一位美丽的女子，在华丽的房屋里白天睡觉，没有人一起说话。人熟睡时头离开了枕头，头发乌黑光亮，衣服上都残留着异乎寻常的香气。
偷偷地进来碰到了有珍珠镶饰的门环，惊醒了女子的好梦。甜美可爱的脸上，洋溢着盈盈笑意；你看着我，我看着你，彼此真有说不完的无限深情。
注释
菩萨蛮：词牌名，又名《子夜歌》《重叠金》《花溪碧》，双调四十四字，用韵两句一换，凡四易韵，平仄递转。
蓬莱院：形容庭院幽美如蓬莱仙境一般。蓬莱：是古代传说中的三座仙山之一。据《史记·封禅书》中记载：“蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲，此三神山者其传在勃海中，去人不远，患且至，则船风引而去。盖尝有至者，诸仙人及不死之药皆在焉。”后就用蓬莱泛指人们想象中的美好的仙境。
天台女：本代指仙女，这里指像仙女一样美丽的女子。天台：山名，在浙江省天台县北。相传东汉时期刘晨、阮肇二人曾上天台山采药，遇见二位女子，留住半年回家，归家时发现已过了七世，乃知二女子为仙女。于是后人用“天台女”代指仙女。
画堂：本汉代宫中的殿堂，后用以泛指绘饰华丽的堂屋。
昼寝：白天睡觉。
抛枕：形容人熟睡时头离开了枕头，把它抛在一边。
翠云：形容女子的头发乌黑浓密。宋代柳永《洞仙歌》中有句：“记得翠云偷剪，和鸣彩凤于飞。”云：云髻，形容妇女的发髻乌黑卷曲如云的样子。
光：光亮。
异香：指女子身上散发出异乎寻常的香气。
潜来：偷偷地进来，暗中来。
珠锁：指用珍珠连缀而成或有珍珠镶饰的门环。门动时可以发出清脆悦耳的声音。
惊觉：惊醒。
银屏：指白色而有光泽的屏风或围屏。银屏梦：这里指好梦。
脸慢：脸慢，指细嫩而美丽的脸。慢：同“曼”，形容容颜的美好。
盈盈：形容仪态美好的样子。
相看：对看，仔细看。

此词当是李煜描写自己与小周后幽会之情景，创作于北宋乾德二年（964年）前后。和《菩萨蛮·花明月暗笼轻雾》当为姊妹篇。

菩萨蛮·蓬莱院闭天台女鉴赏
前一首词写男女之问的私会，是女子在晚上潜往男子的居处。这首词仍是写私会，却是男子悄然行至女子的寝所，时间则是在正午。
词中所写只是二人相对的一个片刻，女子写得娇羞妩媚，男子写得温柔体贴，一片脉脉深情。首句中“蓬莱”、“天台”的形容，不仅暗寓女子的美貌，也代指居所的精美，下启“画堂”，再加修饰，有一种金屋藏娇的意味。而用一“闭”字，强调深居禁严，难以接触，巳露出私情消息，与下片中的“潜来”相呼应。“人无语”，既指“昼寝”时光，周遭静谧无声，也表示到来的步履悄悄，不曾有所惊动。既没有惊动侍从，也没有惊动正在午睡的爱人，于是男子得以俯身注视卧榻上的爱人。她睡得香甜，睡得酣畅。乌黑闪亮的长发随意地披散在枕头上，绣花夏衣又轻又薄，透出那身体特有的香味，令人心醉。或是身体的移动，或是脚步的挪动，一个不经意的细微动作．带动了男子身上悬垂的玉佩，发出一二声清脆的鸣响，惊醒了梦中人。只见她双眸慢慢睁开，正与俯看者的目光相对，笑容随即在美丽的脸庞上轻轻荡漾，二人无语，“相看无限情”。这传神的描写，有“此时无声胜有声”之妙。
上片写“潜来”光景，下片写“相看”情景，过片以“珠琐”承绣衣，正将会见的双方相联系。两阕一气呵成，上下之间，几乎不见痕迹。结句最有味，本是一方行为的叙述，此时换作了双方感情的交汇，虽是平平的描述，但热烈在其中。
词中的“鸳鸯梦”用得很着力。因是思念而有“潜来”，因是深爱而俯身含情凝视，故因己及入而推想女子睡得如此香甜，一定是在梦中有相聚，鸳鸯正成双。唯其如此，女子“惊觉”之时，才不以为惊，而是“慢脸笑盈盈”。“鸳鸯梦”虽是猜测，却是感情的祈愿，因而将现实与幻梦浑然交织，梦里梦外，写出二人的心灵相通。注目相对之时，自有无限的柔情。又如“盈盈”二字的巧用。“盈盈”与“笑”相连，是形容笑容的可爱，而“盈盈”又可独立出来形容目光，刻画“相看”的情态，可谓是一词多义。

李煜，五代十国时南唐国君，961年-975年在位，字重光，初名从嘉，号钟隐、莲峰居士。汉族，彭城（今江苏徐州）人。南唐元宗李璟第六子，于宋建隆二年(961年)继位，史称李后主。开宝八年，宋军破南唐都城，李煜降宋，被俘至汴京，封为右千牛卫上将军、违命侯。后因作感怀故国的名词《虞美人》而被宋太宗毒死。李煜虽不通政治，但其艺术才华却非凡。精书法，善绘画，通音律，诗和文均有一定造诣，尤以词的成就最高。千古杰作《虞美人》、《浪淘沙》、《乌夜啼》等词。在政治上失败的李煜，却在词坛上留下了不朽的篇章，被称为“千古词帝”。
