译文
从长安告老回家了，在一直呆过了七十年之后；多么的不易呀，七十年，这自古以来都少有！——我倦了，与其闲置，不如归来。归来好啊：夏天，看荷花：凉雨过后，池塘的夜多美；秋天，看桂花：淡淡的风里，小山也不错。别问怎么打发这日子？——喝酒，喝酒；再不，写写诗吧。
冬天：不要辜负了那竹上的雪；春天，不要辜负了那柳边的月。过闲的人，总有些痴。种花之事无人问津，与花相对的意味，只有老天明了。好笑的是那山中：云，早早的出去；鸟，迟迟地归来。——竟是这般的忙碌！
注释
⑴最高楼：词牌名。南宋后作者较多，以《稼轩长短句》为准。八十一字，前片四平韵，后片三平韵，过片错叶二仄韵。体势轻松流美，渐开元人散曲先河。
⑵投老：垂老，临老。倦游：《史记·司马相如传》：“长卿故倦游，虽贫，其人材足依也。”
⑶“七十”句：语出杜甫《曲江二首》诗：“酒债寻常行处有，人生七十古来稀。”
⑷殢（tì）酒：困于酒。李玉《贺新郎·春情》：“帘外残红春已透，镇无聊、殢酒厌厌病。”殢，沉溺，困倦。
⑸“惜花”句：辛弃疾《摸鱼儿·更能消几番风雨》：“更能消、几番风雨。匆匆春又归去。惜春长恨花开早，何况落红无数。”
⑹“云出早”二句：语出陶渊明《归去来兮辞》：“云无心以出岫，鸟倦飞而知还。”

这首词写于宋孝宗淳熙十四年（1187年），是时作者四十八岁，正谪居在上饶。韩无咎七十岁寿辰时，辛弃疾曾写过一阕《水调歌头·寿韩南涧七十》为贺。可能就是在这次宴会上，正是韩无咎或其他的人请他为“四时之赋”，他于是乘醉而写下这阕词。

这阕词中作者虽写他人的四时之事，实际是在借他人的酒杯，来浇自己的块垒的。
此词本是以寓有四时景物为游戏的。然而于祖国，一片报效不得之忠心，却于字里行间，处处流露了出来。口里说是要用诗酒来打发生活，准备在花月丛中度过自己的余生，而实际却痛苦于种花的事业无人问，而惜花的心情也没有人知道。这“花”分明是有所指的。作为主战派的他们来说，大约也就是指他们统一的大业无人问，而徒有报效之热忱，竟是只有天知道了。“无人问”、“只天知”，对于他们来说，这是无比巨大的悲哀和寂寞。无怪乎他要笑云儿出去这么早，鸟儿归来这么迟，放着大事不干，如此匆匆，所为何来。结合上面的“种花事业”看，则这也就是那一些蝇营狗苟之辈，为自己的利禄而紧张忙碌得可笑罢了。这一“笑”字，写出了诗人多么高尚的情怀，也写出了诗人无比巨大的悲愤。
词是劝人，其实也是劝自己要放开一些的，殊不知它正告诉了人，他放不开。他本想用游戏三昧的笔墨来写得轻松一点的，谁知仍然满怀悲愤，指着秃子骂和尚了。刘熙载说苏东坡的诗“滔滔汩汩说去，一转便见主意”（《艺概》）。大约好的诗词都是这样的，稼轩此词，亦莫不如是。

辛弃疾（1140－1207），南宋词人。原字坦夫，改字幼安，别号稼轩，汉族，历城（今山东济南）人。出生时，中原已为金兵所占。21岁参加抗金义军，不久归南宋。历任湖北、江西、湖南、福建、浙东安抚使等职。一生力主抗金。曾上《美芹十论》与《九议》，条陈战守之策。其词抒写力图恢复国家统一的爱国热情，倾诉壮志难酬的悲愤，对当时执政者的屈辱求和颇多谴责；也有不少吟咏祖国河山的作品。题材广阔又善化用前人典故入词，风格沉雄豪迈又不乏细腻柔媚之处。由于辛弃疾的抗金主张与当政的主和派政见不合，后被弹劾落职，退隐江西带湖。
