译文
国家命脉日渐衰弱，不知何时才能请得长缨，将敌方首领擒缚！人间自有降龙伏虎的好汉，只是无人不拘一格任用人材。如不信，试看南宋初年的抗金名将韩世忠吧。张良遇谷城公传授《太公兵法》、唐将李筌得骊山老母讲解《阴符经》而立下大功，但是就算他们没有承授与凭借，照样也可以保家卫国建立功勋。
少年时期也曾雄心壮志、心怀家国，只叹从未实现。登楼远望，揽镜自照，伤感一事无成，痛心国势日非，愁肠百转、感慨万千。听说北面蒙古骑兵来势汹汹，进攻时利用的冲梯，屡次狂舞于边城。不要再大谈空想而不以身抗敌，自古以来敌人真正难以抵抗的是战场上的勇士，假如没有像张巡、许远这样的良将，即使有坚固的城池，也不能久守。有志儿郎，不要在发无聊呻吟，赶快投笔从戎，保家卫国吧！

国脉：国家的命脉。
长缨：指捕缚敌人的长绳。
韩五：韩世忠，他在兄弟中排行第五，年轻时有“泼韩五”的浑号。
金汤：指坚固的防御工事。
张许：指张巡、许远，安史之乱时，他们坚守睢阳，坚贞不屈。

贺新郎·国脉微如缕鉴赏
这首词是作者和朋友王实之六首唱和词中的第四首。同作者其它豪放词作一样，字里行间洋溢着济世救国的激情和宏伟志向。
“国脉微如缕”，一个“缕”字，让人想起飘忽不定、一触即断的游丝，想起“千钧一发”的危急。一个极形象的比喻，说明国家的命脉，实在已经衰微不堪。于是发一声问：不知何时才能请得长缨，将敌方首领擒缚！当时，蒙古贵族屡屡攻宋，南宋王朝危在旦夕，但统治者却不思进取，嫉贤妒能。头三句的劈空而下，将形势的紧迫，统治者的麻木不仁，请缨报国之志士的热忱，尽情表达出来，纸上铮铮有声。
接着，作者抒发任人唯贤的议论。以“未必”二字起句，道出了作者的自信，人间自有降龙伏虎的好汉，只是无人不拘一格任GREn/ target=_blank class=infotextkey>用人材。如不信，试看南宋初年的抗金名将韩世忠吧。他在兄弟中排行第五，年轻时有“泼韩五”的浑号，出身行伍，既没有名师传授，也未遇神仙指点，但是却能在谈笑之间大战两河，成为抗金名将。有了这些名将贤相，“国脉微如缕”的惨状也就有扭转的可能了。
以下又连用西汉张良遇谷城公（即黄石公）传授《太公兵法》和唐将李筌得骊山老母讲解《阴符经》而俱立大功的两个典故，来说明即使没有承授与凭借，照样也可以保家卫国建立功勋。作者频频使用“问”、“未必”、“试看取”、“岂……也……”等词，既增加了感染力，而且一气呵成，逻辑严密，虎虎有生气。这种宏论高议，以诗的语言和情感发出，更具一种动人的力量。刘词议论化、散文化和好用典故的特点，于此可见一斑。
下片，作者进而联系到自己的遭遇。“棋柝联句”，表达作者报国从军的夙愿。但这一宏愿都成了过去的梦了。登楼远望，揽镜自照，伤感一事无成，痛心国势日非，愁肠百转、感慨万千。一声长叹，将那长期以来怀才不遇、屡屡丧失杀敌报国之机的心情，尽数迸发了出来。
烈士暮年，壮心不已。下边两句，将当时边境上疾风扑面、黑云压城的情景生动地描绘了出来。北风，暗指北来的蒙古兵，它既点出了入犯的方向，也渲染了入犯者带来的杀伐之气。敌方进攻用的冲梯，屡次狂舞于边城，蒙古军队攻势的凶猛和情势的危急，由此可见。金汤，指坚固的防御工事，张许指张巡、许远，安史之乱时，他们坚守睢阳，坚贞不屈。大敌当前，假如没有像张巡、许远这样的良将，即使有坚固的城池，也不能久守。“汉拜郅都，匈奴避境；赵命李牧，林胡远窜。则朔方之它危，边域之胜负，地方千里，制在一贤。”（《旧唐书·突厥传》载卢俌上唐中宗疏中语）这里再次提到了任人唯贤的重要性。
作者以反问句式写出上面两句，有理有据，足以服人。接着，作者大声疾呼：好汉们，不需再计较个人得失，不需发无聊之呻吟，赶快投笔从戎，共赴国难吧！这是对爱国志士的期望，也是和王实之共勉。这两句，句短气促，喷涌而出，极富鼓舞力量。
此词慷慨陈词，议论风发，笔力雄壮，又极尽抑扬顿挫之致；运用了大量典故，自然贴切，蕴义丰富。这是宋末词坛上议论化、散文化与形象性、情韵美相结合的代表作。
