楚山不可极，归路但萧条。
海色晴看雨，江声夜听潮。

译文
楚地的山脉绵延不断没有尽头，返回故乡的路是如此崎岖萧条。
看到东海日出，彩霞缤纷，就知道要下雨了；听到大江波涛澎湃的声音，就知道夜潮来临。
我书剑飘零，羁留近于南斗之下，家乡遥远，家书难收，我家北风之下的大雁，吹到南方而不能北回。
吴潭的美橘熟了，想寄一点回家，可惜无人把它带到洛阳。
注释
楚山：楚地之山。
南斗：星名，南斗六星，即斗宿。古人有“南斗在吴”的说法。
潭橘：吴潭的橘子。
洛桥：洛阳天津桥，此代指洛阳。
江南旅情鉴赏
这首作品里江南景色是一种意象中的景色，全诗仿佛都出于大概统一这样的视角。像“楚山不可极”，就将背景的广阔简洁得说明了；“海色晴看雨，江声夜听潮”，其实也是一种大概的描绘。不过诗里也有细节刻画，诗人主要用细节刻画表现对家乡的思念，对乡邻的牵挂，旅行中见到的优美景色固然不俗，那心中对故乡的思念之情也表露得很殷切。比如用星象和季风来说明远离故乡羁绊在外的情况，为后一句的难以找到合适人选来寄送橘子做了一个铺垫，心中的乡愁之浓烈可见是真实的。
江南烟雨名扬天下，但是江南临海，海岸线很长，这固有的广阔风光却历来少有写者。诗人在这首诗中表现出来的就恰恰是江南山川广袤的景致。说祖咏是一位心思巧妙的诗人，确实如此。
从感情色彩上分析这首诗，诗人的表达还是很含蓄的。也许放在今天，如果做同样的事情会显得很做作，甚至有些婆婆妈妈，但是放在诗人当时的情况下，为了找不到捎东西回家乡的人而苦恼就是一种思乡情怀的自然流露。
对于诗中用到的来描绘景色的素材，大致上把江南既婉约又壮阔的秀丽山川写给了后人，也许里面有着些许豪气，但是豪气是藏在字句里的，不让读者有被气势所迫的感觉。在祖咏的《江南旅情》中，江南实在少了些脂粉气，多了些清爽。

祖咏 唐代诗人。洛阳（今属河南）人。生卒年不详。少有文名，擅长诗歌创作。与王维友善。王维在济州赠诗云："结交二十载，不得一日展。贫病子既深，契阔余不浅。"（《赠祖三咏》）其流落不遇的情况可知。开元十二年(724)，进士及第，长期未授官。后入仕，又遭迁谪，仕途落拓，后归隐汝水一带。
