南北短长亭，行路无情客有情。年去年来鞍马上，何成！短鬓垂垂雪几茎。
孤舍一檠灯，夜夜看书夜夜明。窗外几竿君子竹，凄清，时作西风散雨声。
南乡子·南北短长亭鉴赏
相传为李白所作《菩萨蛮》写行人归意云：“何处是归程，长亭更短亭。”本词起首即由此借来。“短长亭”，短亭、长亭，为古时设在大路边供行人休歇的亭舍。庾信《哀江南赋》：“十里五里，长亭短亭。”谓十里一长亭，五里一短亭。古诗词中“长短亭”的意象历来是与羁旅漂泊之意连在一起的，本词中作者又进而在前面加了“南北”二字，使这长长的“行路”更显得漫漫不尽令人生愁了，因此作者谓之“无情”。路程本身距离的长与短，实为人的感觉，谓其“无情”更是人的情感的投射，所以这“行路无情”实在是“人有情”的表现，以“无情”衬“有情”更显出其“情”的强烈与深刻。接下来作品又从时间长久的角度来进一步写这“年去年来”的羁旅之苦。作者在另一首《南乡子》中写道：“游子绕天涯，才离蛮烟又塞沙。岁岁年年寒食里，无家。”这几句可谓这年复一年的“鞍马”行旅生活的注脚。令作者不堪的还不仅是这没有休止的漂泊之苦，更有一种老大无成而生命虚耗的憾恨，一语“何成”，已见词人憾恨之深；几许“雪茎”，更衬出其悲愁之重。长路漫漫，归期遥遥，匆匆行旅间，鬓丝已染霜雪而事业却无所成——游子漂泊的愁苦、憾恨与困惑就这样一层层地被推向了极致，弥漫于词中。
下片着重描写游子漂泊中孤清之怀。首二句述其寒夜读书的情景。宋黄庭坚《寄黄几复》诗“桃李春风一杯酒，江湖夜雨十年灯”句似为词人所本，不过词中所写当为作者生活实情的描述。其中“灯”的意象是耐人寻味的。它照明的不仅是羁旅中的孤舍，实际上更有主人公那颗孤寂的心。在漫漫旅途上，也只有“书”能给他以慰藉，让他得以超脱那难忍的孤独和愁苦。有了这“一檠灯”，整个凄寒的词境也顿然增添了几分暖意。檠，灯架，烛台，这里用作量词。同时，这灯下夜读的情节也向人们展示了主人公清高雅逸的襟怀，下旬中的“窗外几竿君子竹”即是这种襟怀的象征。“凄清”一词很准确地道出了竹子那身处孤寒之境却不失清雅风韵的品质。古人称松、竹、梅、兰为君子四友，故而作者在这里直接称竹为“君子竹”，词人在此直道“君子竹”，其深意便在于表达对不为时困而凛然有节的古君子之风的仰慕与追求。煞尾处“时作西风散雨声”又从听觉感受上来写竹：西风飒飒，竹叶簌簌，好似风吹雨散一般。显然，这字里行间透露出的是“君子竹”那潇洒无畏的风神，传达出的是词人不惧孤寒不夺雅志的精神。竹声“时作”，余音不绝，语虽尽而意未穷。
与唐宋词中某些抒写羁旅情怀之作的明显区别是，词人没有陷于孤独悲戚的情感中而不能自拔，上片言漂泊之苦，作者极尽渲染之能事，但这只是一个铺垫，至下片则一“灯”擎而愁云散，述读书以明志，赋翠竹以寄情，表现了一种积极向上的人生观，可谓“哀而不伤”者也，正如王鹏运评刘秉忠词所云:“雄廓而不失之伧楚”（《藏春乐府跋》）。

刘秉忠（1216-1274年），初名刘侃，字仲晦，号藏春散人，邢州（今河北邢台市）人。因信佛教改名子聪，任官后而名刘秉忠。元朝杰出政治家、文学家。刘秉忠是元初政坛一位很具特色的政治人物，对于元代政治体制、典章制度的奠定发挥了重大作用。同时，又是一位诗文词曲兼擅的文学家。至元十一年，逝世。元世祖赠太傅，封赵国公，谥号文贞。元成宗时，追赠太师，改谥文正。元仁宗时，追封常山王。
