译文
我又向南方出发了！可笑今年如此飘泊不定，心中情怀到底如何？纵然文章能在世间引起轰动，也不过是在纸面上妄谈民生罢了，对现实社会起不了影响。像那吹皱一池春水的春风一样，能起什么作用？傍晚时分，忽然下起雨来，天空中雁影不见。萧瑟秋声中，只见关山一片苍茫。
细细分析我青春的心态，也曾经愿意像家乡的名人吴越王钱镠一样，在广陵吴市骑骏马，赏钱塘潮，过着奢侈的生活。我希望得到大量的金钱，来尽情地和天下美人名士相交，更要去认识燕赵地区的豪侠之士。明年北京的春天，还是会早早到来吧，劝那北京的杏花，务必不要因为苦苦地思念我而憔悴。我写下的木叶词，惹起了众多的和作，都是要罢官休隐江湖的议论啊。
注释
金缕曲：词牌名，又名“贺新郎”﹑“乳燕飞”，一百十六字，上片五十七字，下片五十九字，各十句六仄韵。癸酉（yǒu）：嘉庆十八年（1813年）。
鸾飘凤泊：比喻英俊之士落魄沉沦，亦兼寓夫妻离别意。
卿：你，作者自谓。
聊：愿意。 广陵：今江苏扬州。 吴市：指苏州，与扬州皆当时吴越之地的大都会。
燕邯侠子：燕指古燕国，国都为蓟（北京），邯指河北邯郸，为赵国都城。古称燕赵之地多侠士，故以为代称。
断莫：千万不要。
木叶：树叶。木叶怨似指飘落之悲。
罢论：罢休之论，指作罢了经国纬世之志，誓愿隐逸草野江湖。

这首词作于嘉庆十八年（1813年），这年四月，作者由徽州父亲府署赴北京应顺天乡试，未第，却赶上了林清等领导的天理教起义军攻打皇宫的重大事变。七月，其新结缡的妻子段美贞病殁。数月间接连遇见人生两大挫折，龚自珍心中自不能免苍凉之感，悲慨之情，作此词述怀。

上阕“我又南行矣！”一声惊叹感喟语劈首揭出，便现突兀倔傲之势，然而，这并非故作姿态，实在是积郁不平的迸发，所以才含蕴丰厚、情意挚深，足可振起通体，为下面开出无限天地，直注终句。“笑今年、鸾飘凤泊，情怀何似”，是写一己的生活遭际。龚自珍去年春天方于苏州结缡，新妇系外祖父段玉裁之女孙段美贞，现在她留居龚父丽正徽州官舍，南北离居；“笑”，笑我为了微末功名奔波风尘，不惜割舍新婚后的旖旎柔情没有什么价值。如今落第返归，情怀自能想知。“纵使文章惊海内，纸上苍生而已”，又是换一种说法。杜甫《宾至》：“岂有文章惊海内，漫劳车马驻江干”，词中反其意用之，谓即使文章佳绝，为天下知闻，也不过空谈而已，于苍生国计没有切实补益。“文章”，因为功名不就，故无法推行，方有上面流露出来的叹息。以下再进而申足此意：“似春水，干卿何事？”朝廷自有定策成计，所行止岂于彼一介书生相干，又岂肯听汝哓哓，这实在是冷峻之极的反语。
以上叙事抒怀，尽吐一腔垒块。后自‘‘暮雨忽来”到“去如水”四句则转笔写景，紧扣眼前见闻。骤然间暮雨急倾，鸿雁已惊飞，杏杳无踪，环顾天地呼啸、关山莽莽苍苍，一派秋声入耳动心，似乎也在催人归去，“去如水”，莫再迟回疑虑。句中的“客”当系自指，就南返行径所言，暗暗透出此次京都之行的失望。
下阕推想未来人生情景，表露胸中夙愿与壮志。“华年心事从头理”，经过屡次落第不遇的现实教训，懂得社会人生的艰难坎坷，就不再是那么单纯幼稚、仅凭一腔热情行事处世了，需要从新认识，估价早先的“心绪”。“也何聊，看潮走马，广陵吴市”，汉·枚乘《七发》有广陵观潮的描写，认为功用是“澡概胸中，洒练五脏，澹澉手足，颒濯发齿；榆弃恬怠，输泻滇浊，分决狐疑，发皇耳目”。曹植《名都篇》：“名都多妖女，京洛出少年；宝剑直千金，被服丽且鲜；斗鸡东郊道，走马长楸间”；又《史记》载伍子胥吹箫乞食于吴市，以上藉旧典表明将不再继续皓首穷经、寻章雕句的腐儒岁月，而是冶游狂侠，浪迹江湖，这正属“心绪从头理”后的结果，因之接着叙说：“愿得黄金三百万，交尽美人名士，更结尽、燕邯侠子”。韩愈《送董邵南游河北序》：“燕赵古称多感慨悲歌之士”，还拟延揽结交天下人才，共谋经国大业，而不只幻想依赖一二当权者了。
以上壮怀豪情足可以惊动人心，便觉秋去春来，荣枯递代，天下事无逾此理者，不必拘拘于一时成败。结拍“木叶怨，罢论起”，借现事以归束全篇。
这首词因落第出京触引，叙事咏怀，纵横倾泻，直觉—派沉郁悲慨之气勃然纸上，而柔情侠骨交注笔端，咳唾珠玉随处生发，正属定庵的一贯格调。

龚自珍（1792年8月22日～1841年9月26日）清代思想家、文学家及改良主义的先驱者。27岁中举人，38岁中进士。曾任内阁中书、宗人府主事和礼部主事等官职。主张革除弊政，抵制外国侵略，曾全力支持林则徐禁除鸦片。48岁辞官南归，次年暴卒于江苏丹阳云阳书院。他的诗文主张“更法”、“改图”，揭露清统治者的腐朽，洋溢着爱国热情，被柳亚子誉为“三百年来第一流”。著有《定庵文集》，留存文章300余篇，诗词近800首，今人辑为《龚自珍全集》。著名诗作《己亥杂诗》共315首。
