译文
这竹像是葛陂中的神龙还了原身，画在屋墙上，惹得凤凰飞来栖停。一阵风过，笋壳的粉皮上似乎清香可闻，竹下的苍苔，仿佛还保留着雨后的湿冷。息斋道人李衍的画竹真是妙笔生春。当明亮的月光纵横地投下清影，我睁开酒后初醒的眼睛，简直像是面对着一片翠生生的潇湘竹林。
注释
息斋：元画家李衍，号息斋道人。善绘竹，有《竹谱》。
葛陂里神龙悦形：《神仙传》载，东汉费长房身跨青竹杖腾身入云，下地后弃杖于葛陂水中，竹杖即化为青龙。葛陂，湖名，在河南新蔡县境内。
箨（tuò）：竹的壳叶。
阑干：纵横貌。
潇湘翠影：谓竹。湘地以产斑竹著称，称湘妃竹，相传为湘夫人泪点洒竹而化。

《中国美术家人名辞典》介绍李衍：“善画竹，青绿设色师李颇。人争欲得之，求者日踵门不厌。画竹二百年来，用意精深，无如之者。后使交趾，深入竹乡，于竹之形色情状，辨析精到。”故宫博物院藏有他的画竹，不易见，但这首曲子却能使读者想见其作品的风神。
该篇题为“息斋画竹”，作者却并不直接评说竹子画得如何如何，而是先巧妙地用了两则传说的典故：一是东汉仙人费长房，掷青竹杖化龙事。作者将画上的竹子比为“神龙蜕形”，可见竹姿的劲健和生动。二是凤凰食竹事。“丹山”是凤凰的巢穴，凤凰非竹实不食，如今受到画竹的诱惑而飞来“栖庭”，可知李衍所作的是一幅壁画。“神龙”、“彩凤”，对仗工整，妙在前者是画竹本身的暗喻，后者则是作者观画后的奇特联想。这两句用的都是神话传说，作者引为感受，实是赞美李衍绘出了非人境所有的仙作。
三、四两句，进一步细绘画面的内容。李衍的这幅竹子，中间夹杂着新竹，竹尖从“粉箨”中抽出，而竹下还点缀着苔藓。画竹画出壳皮上的细粉已是够绝的了，更何况是那样鲜活，仿佛一阵风吹来还会扬起它的清香；苔色深苍，调色自亦不易，而奇在画上的苍苔还让人产生“冷”的感觉，似乎刚刚经受过一番雨水的洗刷。这两句充分调动了艺术审美的联想，综合了形、色、香、觉的感官享受，将“息斋画竹”的外象和气质重现得栩栩如生。要不是作者加一句“老仙翁笔底春生”，人们恐怕会错以为是一丛真竹子呢。
末两句显示了“息斋画竹”的总体效果。李衍画在壁上的这幅杰作，犹如在庭院中栽上了一片翠竹，宜月宜酒，使人仿佛置身于潇湘一带的自然美景之中。这两句富于诗情画意，用明月阑珊、酒意瞢腾、潇湘缥缈这种种充溢着朦胧美的意境作为借衬，展现出画作娟美的风神。全篇未出“画竹”二字，却句句不离题面；不下文字断语，却用一系列形象代替，作出了最好说明。

徐再思引(1320年前后在世)，元代散曲作家。字德可，曾任嘉兴路吏。因喜食甘饴，故号甜斋。浙江嘉兴人。生卒年不详，与贯云石为同时代人，今存所作散曲小令约100首。作品与当时自号酸斋的贯云石齐名，称为“酸甜乐府”。后人任讷又将二人散曲合为一编，世称《酸甜乐府》，收有他的小令103首。
