译文
将军镇守着边远的古城汧州，水流清爽山色青葱春光柔柔。
夜气清和满城的歌舞刚散去，过路人不信这里是边镇尽头。
西域四镇的战士调弓试箭，蕃人不敢靠近东边来侵犯。
千里边防线上都平安无事，平安烽火一站站传入京城。
注释
穷边：荒僻的边远地区。
将军作镇：将军镇守。晋潘岳《为贾谧作赠陆机》诗：“藩岳作镇，辅我京室。”作：一作“坐”。古汧（qiān）州：唐属官内道，领汧源、汧阳两县。今为陕西千县。
水腻（nì）：水流细涓，滑润如油。山春：山上有了春色。节气柔：天气暖和。
丝管：弦乐器与管乐器。泛指乐器。亦借指音乐。
行人：征行之人，即士卒。唐杜甫《兵车行》：“车辚辚，马萧萧，行人弓箭各在腰。”边头：边疆；边地。唐王昌龄《塞下曲》之四：“边头何惨惨，已葬霍将军。”
箭利弓调（tiáo）：使箭利把弓调。四镇：据《唐书·陆挚》略云：四镇指“朔方、泾原、陇右、河东四节度。”又唐时称龟兹、于阗、焉耆、疏勒为西域四镇。（见《小学绀珠·地理类》）
蕃（fān）人：中国古代对外族或异国人的泛称。蕃，通“ 番 ”。近东行：指相对于四镇东西两边来说的。西边为少数民族，东边为唐帝国。
沿边：靠近边境一带。浑：全，全然。无事：平安无事。
平安火：唐代每三十里置一堠，每日初夜举烽火报无事，谓之“平安火”。

穷边词二首创作背景
这组诗写边镇的升平景象，借以赞扬边镇守将的防守之功。作者在唐宪宗元和十年（815年），曾以记室从“陇西公”镇泾州（今属甘肃），诗或作于此时。

穷边词二首鉴赏
这组诗共两首，其中第一首诗首句“将军作镇古汧州”，点明此诗颂扬的对象，下面二句诗即介绍了将军担任镇守之职后，古州出现的繁荣景象。诗人着意渲染了春日的山、水、节气和清夜的丝管，使人感到这里不再有边地的荒凉，不再有边地的战火气息，耳濡目染的都是欣欣向荣的太平景象。“水腻山春节气柔”，水腻，自是春水的柔美形态，和夏水的汹涌浩荡有别。用“腻”字形容春水，自然也含了诗人的赞美之意。“山春”二字简洁地描绘出群山万壑山花烂漫的无限春色。节气柔，是说节气柔和，风雨以时。这句的意思是：春光柔媚，山清水秀；而明丽的春光，则正是“节气柔”的结果。这是总写春日白天的边镇风光。入夜以后的边镇，又是一番景象。诗人只用了“满城丝管”四字来描绘它，这是用了夸张的手法。丝管之声不是只从高门大户中传出，而是大街小巷满城荡漾。一个“散”字用得极妙，把万家欢乐，没有边警之扰的景象烘托了出来。丝管之声发自“清夜”，又说明边镇在欢乐中清静而有秩序，虽然欢乐，却不扰嚷。因此，地虽是“穷边”，景却是美景。难怪从内地来的客人看到这种春意盎然、歌舞升平的景象，竟然不相信这是边塞之地。这种太平景象的出现，应该归功于“作镇”的将军。但是诗人却没有对将军致边地于太平之功直接赞美一词，只是把赞美之情暗含于对美景的赞扬之中，用笔显得非常委婉。结句写行人的感想，仍然避免自己直说誉词。“行人不信”，似乎是作为客观现象来写，其实来来往往的行人也包括诗人自己。那种由衷的赞美之情写得蕴藉有味。
第二首诗描绘的也是一派太平景象，但这太平景象不是平白无故来的，而是将士们长期英勇守边的结果。如果不是“箭利弓调四镇兵”，就难以实现“蕃人不敢近东行”，当然“沿边千里浑无事，唯见平安火入城”也就无从谈起。这就表现出了将士守卫边疆的功劳，表达了作者对守边将士的由衷赞美之情。

姚合，陕州硖石人。生卒年均不详，约唐文宗太和中前后在世。以诗名。登元和十一年（公元八一六年）进士第。初授武功主簿，人因称为姚武功。调富平、万年尉。宝历中，（公元八二六年左右）历监察御史，户部员外郎。出任荆、杭二州刺史。后为给事中，陕、虢观察使。与马戴、费冠卿、殷尧藩、张籍游，李频师事之。诗与贾岛齐名，号称“姚、贾”。仕终秘书监。合著有诗集十卷，《新唐书艺文志》及选王维、祖咏等十八人诗，为极玄集一卷，又摭古人诗联，叙其措意，各有体要，撰诗例一卷，（均《唐才子传》）并传于世。
