在重阳节这天登高回望故乡，身处他乡，设席送朋友离开，举杯之际，分外愁。
心中已经厌倦了南方客居的各种愁苦，我想北归不得，鸿雁为何还要从北方来。
注释
九月九日：指重阳节。
望乡台：古代出征或流落在外乡的人，往往登高或登土台，眺望家乡，这种台称为望乡台。
他席：别人的酒席。这里指为友人送行的酒席。
他乡：异乡。
南中：南方，这里指四川一带。
那：为何。
北地：北方。
蜀中九日创作背景
王勃一生遭遇坎坷，经常离家为宦漫游，因此怀乡送别诗是王勃诗中最常见的一类题材，如这首《蜀中九日》及其名作《送杜少府之任蜀州》。咸亨元年（670年）重阳节，客居西蜀的王勃与友人一起登玄武山遥望故乡。时逢重阳佳节，又是客中送客，勾起了诗人浓郁的乡愁，于是作了这首诗。

蜀中九日鉴赏
诗歌开头就承题，“九月九日望乡台”，点明了时间是重阳节，地点是玄武山，此处将玄武山比作望乡台，以此来表达乡愁，思乡之情倍增。“他席他乡送客杯”，点明了诗人当时是在异乡的别宴上喝着送客的酒，倍感凄凉。诗歌的前两句就勾勒出了一个易让人伤感的环境，正逢重阳佳节，又是客中送客，自然容易勾起浓郁的乡愁，于是就很自然地引起了下两句对鸿雁看似无理之问：“人情已厌南中苦，鸿雁那从北地来？”
北雁南飞本是自然现象，而王勃偏将自己的思乡之情加在它身上，怪罪鸿雁，我想北归不得，你却奈何非要从北方飞来，平添我北归不能的愁思。这一问虽然毫无道理，却在强烈的对比中烘托了真挚的感情，将思乡的愁绪推向了高峰。这两句是这首诗中的名句，前人在评价这两句诗时说：“读之，初似常语，久而自知其妙。”的确，这一问虽貌似不假思索脱口而出，实际上却是诗人用心良苦、匠心独具之处。诗人将其怀乡之情融入对自然景物的描绘之中，借无情之景来抒发自己内心深沉的情感，开启了唐人绝句寓情于景的先河。
这首诗的抒情手法亦变化多端，第一句用“望乡台”一词突出了诗人乡心之切；第二句以客中送客更突出了在异乡的孤独感；第三句直抒胸中之苦，感情强烈；第四句却委婉别致，借景抒情，以鸿雁的不知南中之苦来反衬自己的思乡之情，这样反复地抒发更是突出了乡愁之浓烈。语言简洁亦是这首诗较大的特色，用了近似日常的口语，如“他席他乡”，“那从北地来”，显得浅近亲切，这也是这首诗流传广泛的原因之一。
初唐时绝句发展缓慢，其表现方式大体上沿袭汉魏和南朝传统。而王勃的这首诗仅以四句来写乡思，却将乡愁抒发得淋漓尽致，突破了唐初宫廷绝句多借咏物寓干进之意的小格局；诗人在诗中还有意吸收了歌行的句调，以虚词递进的句式做结语，对绝句的发展起着重大作用。

王勃（649或650～676或675年），唐代诗人。汉族，字子安。绛州龙门(今山西河津)人。王勃与杨炯、卢照邻、骆宾王齐名，世称“初唐四杰”，其中王勃是“初唐四杰”之首。唐高宗上元三年（676年）八月，自交趾探望父亲返回时，不幸渡海溺水，惊悸而死。王勃在诗歌体裁上擅长五律和五绝，代表作品有《送杜少府之任蜀州》等；主要文学成就是骈文，无论是数量还是质量，堪称一时之最，代表作品有《滕王阁序》等。
