吉州吉水人，字伯大，一字诗之，号东山。杨万里子。以荫入仕。宁宗嘉定四年守湖州，有治绩。擢经略广东，迁福建安抚使，以忤权贵去职。理宗绍定元年起判江西宪台，寻以敷文阁直学士致仕。卒年七十九。谥文惠。
