留元刚(一作纲),字茂潜,晚自号云麓子,泉州晋江(今福建泉州)人。恭子，正孙。宁宗开禧元年（一二○五）试中博学宏词科，特赐同进士出身（《宋会要辑稿》选举一二之二四）。嘉定元年（一二○八），除祕阁校理，二年，为太子舍人兼国史院编修官、实录院检讨官（《南宋馆阁续录》卷九）。迁直学士院，三年，兼太子侍讲，除起居舍人，以母忧去（《宋中兴学士院题名录》）。起知温州（清乾隆《温州府志》卷一七），移赣州，以事罢，筑圃北山以终。有《云麓集》，已佚。事见清道光《福建通志》卷一七六《留正传》附。今录诗七首。
