译文
远望苍莽迷蒙的寒空秋色令人发愁，独上高楼即听到驻军呜呜的号角声。
吴地歌姬为寄托怨思而吹响了双管，荆轲临行前辞别燕太子丹大声悲歌。
千里边塞山河辽阔暮色苍茫，山顶燃起如明星似的烽火更显得秋之萧索。
入夜之后寒霜浓重西风吹起，陇水悄无声息地凝冻成了冰导致难以畅流。
注释
回中：回中道。汉武帝巡幸郡国，为行路方便，辟回中道，为丝绸之路中的一段。南起干河河谷（今陕西陇县北），北出萧关（今宁夏固原东南）。一说指回中宫。秦始皇曾在干河河谷内修造回中宫作为其行宫，故址在今陕西陇县西北。
苍莽寒空：一作“莽莽云空”（《文苑英华》）。苍莽，广阔无边的样子。
戍（shù）角：边防驻军的号角声。
吴姬：泛指吴地歌姬。怨思：怨恨悲伤。双管：古乐器。
燕客悲歌：用荆轲在易水与燕太子丹、高渐离辞别时歌“风萧萧兮易水寒，壮士一去兮不复还”之事。别：一作“动”，一作“上”。五侯：泛指权贵豪门。
关山：关隘山岭。
一星：指山顶燃起的烽火如明星般耀眼。烽火：古时边防报警的烟火。朔云：北方的云气。朔，泛指北方。
夜来：入夜。西风：西面吹来的风。此指秋风。
陇水：河流名。源出陇山，因名。在今陕西省陇县至甘肃省平凉一带。冻：一作“噎”。

回中作创作背景
此诗当作于温庭筠西游边塞之时。中国唐代文学学会会长陈尚君在《温庭筠早年事迹考辨》中根据温庭筠所作边塞诗中提到的节候、地名，考察其出塞路线是由长安出发，沿渭川西行，取回中道出萧关，到陇首后折向东北。此诗为温庭筠亲历回中所作。

回中作鉴赏
此诗写征戍之苦。三四句置于全篇中，似是写“燕客”回忆身在江南与亲友相别的悲情场面，当提出来单看。除此二句之外，其余六句均极力渲染边塞景物，没有丝毫主观情绪掺入其中，纯是以景煽情。作者只是客观的把边塞景物呈现出来，至于苦不苦、如何苦等问题，则完全留给读者自己遐想体味。作者无意把读者的思维拘束在文字的范围之内，因此形成一种意蕴绵长的效果。看似不言情只绘景，而情却蕴在景中，这是温庭筠一贯的手法。
全诗描绘了一幅日暮边关阔大苍茫的景象，从中寄寓着诗人客游边地的愁怀。这种边愁是如此的沉重，不能出世为官，亦不能在边塞建功立业。在诗人眼前，是国势衰微军队战斗力下降的悲凉压抑的边塞情景，边塞早已失去了昔日盛唐的荣光，而自己满腹才学却不能受重用而辗转流离，因此触景伤情。“重霜”“西风”“陇水冻不流”，诗人的内心充满了凄苦与悲凉。
全诗语言清新爽利，对回中道一带边塞景色的描写，颇能显现西北边境的苍莽辽阔与悲壮苍凉的情致。明清之际思想家王夫之对温庭筠诗颇多贬抑，但对这首诗却颇为赞赏。

温庭筠（约812—866）唐代诗人、词人。本名岐，字飞卿，太原祁（今山西祁县东南）人。富有天才，文思敏捷，每入试，押官韵，八叉手而成八韵，所以也有“温八叉”之称。然恃才不羁，又好讥刺权贵，多犯忌讳，取憎于时，故屡举进士不第，长被贬抑，终生不得志。官终国子助教。精通音律。工诗，与李商隐齐名，时称“温李”。其诗辞藻华丽，秾艳精致，内容多写闺情。其词艺术成就在晚唐诸词人之上，为“花间派”首要词人，对词的发展影响较大。在词史上，与韦庄齐名，并称“温韦”。存词七十余首。后人辑有《温飞卿集》及《金奁集》。
