水龙吟·送万信州创作背景
这首词与《高阳台·丰乐楼分韵得如字》一样，都是哀叹宋室危亡之作。在公元1235年（端平二年），蒙古灭金后南下侵宋。此后连年兵事不息。梦窗卒于1274年，再五年南宋朝灭亡，因此词人会有感伤时事，触景生情，抚事兴悲之作。
水龙吟·送万信州鉴赏
《水龙吟》，又名《龙吟曲》、《庄椿岁》、《小楼连苑》。《清真集》入“越调”，《梦窗词》集入“无射商”。各家格式出入颇多，历来都以苏、辛两家之作为准。一百二字，前后片各十一句四仄韵。其他句逗不同者为变格。又第九句第一字并是领格，宜用去声。结句宜用上一、下三句法，较二、二句式收得有力。
“信州”，唐时置，即今之广信府，在江西上饶。万氏出据信州，所以词题用万任官的驻地称之。
上片送别赠言。“几番”两句。此是说好几次与你聚集在一起讨论着国家大事，座中友人都叹惜大好江山惟留半壁，却又因为权臣误国，搞得现在国事如夕阳西坠似的到万分危急的局势。“今朝”三句是说：今天我折柳赠别，希望万君能够凭借“东风”（他人提拔）之力，在仕途上节节上升。“约住”三句，“飞花”、“留燕”中的“花”、“燕”似都是万信州所爱女子的别称。此处是说：在万信州将要离此赴京之时，我为他约来了“花”、“燕”等可爱的女子，与他再见上一面，并谈得难舍难分。“问千牙”三句，“千牙”，太守的别称。此处指代万信州。这是说：我且问问万君，当你进京面奏君王之时，不知道有没有能够将民间中的忠孝事迹全都写进奏章之内否？上片既有对国事的叹惜，又提到万君的私情，再嘱之以正事，可见吴万两人的关系很好。
下片抒发了词人对时局的悲观感，并为朋友预作退路。“闻道”两句，“兰台”，即御史台的别称。此处是说：御史台的工作听说是非常清闲的，你不如效法鸱夷子范蠡，趁机而急流勇退，并以一叶扁舟进入江湖自在快活为上策。“兰台”，照应上片“入奏”。据此万信州这次入朝是去做御史官。该职官本应该将民间的疾苦及“忠孝事”都向君王反映，然而现在却是“清暇”度日，所以词人要为他设想趁早退隐江湖。“贞元”三句是说：唐代的贞观、开元盛世，那时候的GREn/ target=_blank class=infotextkey>用人、治世之国策，到如今还有谁能去采纳呢？只有你还牢记着这些古代明训，并且大力宣扬，但是终究是曲高和寡无人响应啊。“儿骑”三句。“舜”，应指当今皇上。此处是说：你的子女们正在企盼着你趁早回家安度晚年；但是当今皇上却对你还是一再地挽留、借重，希望你能够继续在朝为官，为国出力。“便急回”三句作结，再发出悲观论调。此处是说：你就是从现在起马上改革时政弊端的话，也不能够挽回这危亡的败局了。因为西北方强大的敌人正在虎视耽耽地伺机灭我大宋江山啊！结句以“暖律”喻改革时政；用“天边海上”借喻强敌；以“春寒夜”说明国势的危急。此与首句“斜阳下”，同一意思。

吴文英（约1200～1260），字君特，号梦窗，晚年又号觉翁，四明（今浙江宁波）人。原出翁姓，后出嗣吴氏。与贾似道友善。有《梦窗词集》一部，存词三百四十余首，分四卷本与一卷本。其词作数量丰沃，风格雅致，多酬答、伤时与忆悼之作，号“词中李商隐”。而后世品评却甚有争论。
